Soft autumn, which many guides call soft fall, describes coloring that is warm but low in contrast. Skin is usually beige, golden beige or warm olive, often with a slightly matte look and no strong pink in the cheeks. Hair tends to sit in the middle: dark blonde, light to medium brown, or a muted auburn, frequently with ashy and golden strands mixed together. Eyes are soft hazel, green, gray green or a light warm brown, and the iris rarely has a sharp dark ring.

The defining feature is how close everything sits together. Hair, skin and eyes are within a few shades of each other, so nothing on the face pulls hard against anything else. Strong colors overpower that blend, and icy colors expose it. The palette answers with warmth that has been grayed down: camel instead of orange, sage instead of kelly green, terracotta instead of tomato red.

Think of it as autumn seen through a little haze. The warmth is real, which separates it from soft summer, but the saturation is held back, which separates it from warm autumn and deep autumn.

On the map

Where soft autumn sits among the 12 seasons

On the map soft autumn sits just right of center, at warmth 0.4 on a scale from minus 1 (cool) to 1 (warm), with a medium depth of 0.55 and a clarity of 0.18. That clarity is the lowest of all twelve anchors, lower even than soft summer's 0.22, which is why its dot is the smallest. Measured the way the color test measures, its closest anchors are deep autumn and light spring, then bright spring and warm autumn. Soft summer sits almost level with it on the cool side of the line: the two share depth and softness, and the warmth axis is what splits them.

Recognize it

How to tell if you are a soft autumn

  • Your features blend: hair, skin and eyes sit within a few shades of each other, and a squint shows no single feature jumping out.
  • Gold looks better on you than silver, but bright yellow gold can look loud; brushed or antique gold looks right.
  • Natural hair is dark blonde, light brown or a soft auburn, often with a mix of golden and ashy strands.
  • Eyes are soft hazel, green, gray green or a light warm brown, without a sharp dark ring around the iris.
  • Black and optic white make your face look tired or harsh, while camel and cream look calm.
  • Saturated brights, even warm ones like orange, seem to arrive before you do.

A three-step drape check at home

  1. 1

Stand facing a window in daylight with your hair pulled back and no makeup. Hold Camel under your chin, then a black top. If the camel makes the skin look even and the black makes shadows appear under the eyes, you are on the soft and warm side.

  2. 2

Now compare Sage with an emerald or kelly green item. A soft autumn looks smoother in the sage; the brighter green makes the skin look flat and the color looks like it is wearing you.

  3. 3

Last, hold Dusty Coral against a cool dusty rose or mauve. The coral should bring color back into the cheeks. If the mauve looks better, check the soft summer page instead.

Side by side

Soft autumn vs soft summer

These are the two seasons people confuse most, because both are muted and medium in depth. The difference is the undertone underneath the softness. A soft autumn has a golden or olive base, so grayed colors that also carry warmth (camel, moss, terracotta) make the skin look alive. Put the same person in rose, slate blue or lavender and the face goes slightly sallow, as if the color has been drained from it.

From the autumn side, the giveaway is how the face reacts to peach and coral against rose. Soft autumn skin picks up warmth from Dusty Peach and Dusty Coral; the cooler pinks sit on top of it. Hair often confirms it: a soft autumn's hair has golden or reddish glints in sunlight, where a soft summer's hair looks ash or mousy.

The test that separates them

Hold Dusty Coral, then a dusty rose, under the chin in daylight. If the coral warms the cheeks and the rose looks grayish on you, you are soft autumn.

Side by side

Soft autumn vs warm autumn

Both are autumns and both look right in gold, olive and rust. What separates them is saturation. Warm autumn (true autumn) carries full-strength pumpkin, mustard and forest green. Soft autumn needs the same families with gray mixed in: copper rather than pumpkin, khaki and lichen rather than mustard, muted spruce rather than deep forest.

A warm autumn has more contrast and more golden intensity, often with copper or rich auburn hair and eyes with a warm amber ring. On soft autumn coloring those stronger shades look a step too loud, and the face recedes behind them.

The test that separates them

Compare Copper with a bright pumpkin orange. If the pumpkin looks like a costume and the copper looks like your own coloring, stay with soft autumn.

Leave out

Soft Autumn colors to avoid

Each one with the reason it fights this coloring and a color from the palette that does the same job.

  • Black

Its hard edge makes low-contrast features look washed out, and the shadows under the eyes look deeper.

    Wear instead: Chocolate

  • Optic White

The glare is brighter than anything on a soft autumn face, so the skin looks dull beside it.

    Wear instead: Cream

  • Fuchsia

Cool and fully saturated at once, the two qualities furthest from this palette.

    Wear instead: Rosewood

  • Icy Blue

The cold pastel turns golden beige skin slightly gray.

    Wear instead: Celadon

  • Royal Blue

Strong and cool, it outshouts the face and drains its warmth.

    Wear instead: Slate Teal

  • Bright Orange

The warmth is right but the intensity is not; it looks like the color is wearing you.

    Wear instead: Copper

  • Lemon Yellow

Acid and clear, it makes muted skin look sallow by comparison.

    Wear instead: Soft Gold

  • Charcoal Gray

A cool gray dark flattens the warm cast that makes this coloring look healthy.

    Wear instead: Bronze Brown

Wearing it

Soft autumn clothing and dresses: six outfits

  • Work

    Camel, Cream, Slate Teal

A camel blazer over a cream top with slate teal trousers; keep the lightest color nearest the face.

  • Evening

    Rosewood, Soft Gold

A rosewood dress in a matte or satin finish, with soft gold jewelry as the only contrast.

  • Casual

    Sage, Oatmeal, Cocoa

A sage knit with oatmeal jeans and cocoa boots; three close values keep the look easy.

  • Summer

    Dusty Peach, Khaki

A dusty peach linen dress or shirt with khaki shorts; let the peach take two thirds of the outfit.

  • Winter

    Muted Spruce, Camel, Warm Taupe

A muted spruce coat over camel and warm taupe layers; the coat carries the depth so the face stays bright.

  • Accessories

    Copper, Bronze Brown

Copper or brushed gold jewelry and a bronze brown leather bag, in matte rather than polished finishes.

Stay in the middle

Soft autumn looks best in medium values. Very light outfits wash out and very dark ones overpower, so keep the main color at camel, olive or terracotta depth.

Let neutrals do most of the work

Camel, cream, taupe and chocolate are the heart of the wardrobe. Add one muted color and stop there.

Choose matte fabrics

Linen, suede, brushed cotton and wool sit naturally in this palette. High-shine satin makes the muted colors look muddy.

Hair

Soft Autumn hair color

Shades that suit

  • Golden brown. A medium brown with golden lowlights keeps the soft warmth without adding contrast.
  • Honey blonde. Works best as soft, blended highlights on light brown hair rather than a solid bright blonde.
  • Soft auburn. A muted red brown, closer to cinnamon than copper, adds warmth without jumping forward.
  • Mushroom brown with gold. A neutral brown with a touch of gold suits the hazy side of this palette.
  • Bronde balayage. Brown and blonde blended together echoes the mixed golden and ashy strands soft autumns often have.

Shades that fight it

  • Blue black. It adds a level of contrast the face cannot match, so the skin looks pale and flat.
  • Platinum or icy blonde. The cold, bright tone fights the golden base and washes the complexion out.
  • Vivid copper or red. Saturated red sits on the head like a separate color and makes muted features fade.

Makeup

Soft Autumn makeup: base, cheek, eyes and lips

Base and foundation

Look for a neutral to warm foundation, often labeled with W or N, or a golden beige. Test three shades on the jaw in daylight and choose the one that disappears; if all three look pink, move warmer, and if they look orange, move toward neutral. A satin finish suits soft autumn skin better than a glossy one.

  • Golden beige base #D6B08C
  • Warm neutral base #C9A181

Cheek

Muted peach and soft terracotta blush give color without contrast. Blend the edges well, since a sharp blush line reads stronger than the rest of the face.

  • Muted peach blush #D79A7E
  • Soft terracotta blush #BF7A5F

Eyes

Taupe, khaki, bronze and olive shadows, with a brown or deep olive liner instead of black. A matte crease shade and a soft gold lid shimmer is enough.

  • Olive shadow #7A7450
  • Bronze shadow #9A7550
  • Soft brown liner #5A4434

Lips

Rosy browns, nude peach and brick rose. Avoid frosted pinks and blue reds; a sheer brick or rosewood is the closest a soft autumn gets to a statement lip.

  • Nude peach #C48B72
  • Rosy brown #A8675A
  • Brick rose #8E4C3F

The base

Metals, jewelry and wardrobe neutrals

Brushed gold, bronze and copper. A matte finish suits the palette better than high shine.

Brushed gold, bronze, copper and antique brass all match the warmth without adding glare. Rose gold works when it is soft and matte. Highly polished yellow gold can look brassy against muted skin, so choose a satin finish or a hammered texture.

Natural materials suit this palette especially well: wood, horn, tortoiseshell, amber and leather in tan or cocoa. For glasses, a soft tortoiseshell or a warm brown frame looks more at home than black.

  • Oatmeal
  • Camel
  • Warm Taupe

Every depth

Soft Autumn on fair, medium and deep skin

Fair skin

On fair beige or light golden skin, lean on the lights and neutrals: cream, oatmeal, dusty peach, pale sage. Keep the deeps for coats, trousers and shoes rather than tops.

Medium skin

Medium golden or warm olive skin can wear the whole palette near the face. The mid-tones, sage, moss, muted teal and khaki, often look like they were chosen for this depth.

Deep skin

Deep skin with a soft, warm cast and low contrast between skin, hair and eyes still reads soft autumn. Lean on the deeps and the reds group, bronze brown, rosewood and rust, and use cream rather than oatmeal as the light so there is enough difference to read.

Questions

Soft Autumn questions

Is soft fall the same as soft autumn?

Yes. Fall and autumn are the same season, so soft fall and soft autumn describe the same palette: warm, muted and medium in depth.

What is the difference between soft autumn and soft summer?

Undertone. Both are muted, but a soft autumn looks better in warm muted colors such as camel, coral and moss, while a soft summer looks better in cool muted colors such as rose, slate blue and lavender.

Can a soft autumn wear black?

Away from the face, yes. Near the face, chocolate, bronze brown or muted spruce gives the same depth without the harsh edge.

What hair color suits a soft autumn?

Golden brown, soft auburn, honey blonde highlights and blended bronde. Avoid blue black, platinum and vivid copper, which all add more contrast or saturation than the face carries.

Can a soft autumn wear gray?

A warm gray with beige in it, often called greige or mushroom, works well. A cool charcoal or blue gray tends to make the skin look tired.

What dresses suit soft autumn coloring?

Solid dresses in rosewood, sage, camel or dusty coral, and prints where the colors stay close together. Matte fabrics such as crepe, linen and wool look better than high shine.

Is soft autumn the same as soft summer with a tan?

No. A tan darkens the surface but does not change the undertone underneath, so a soft summer with a tan usually still looks better in cool muted colors.
