Not sure you are a Light Summer?

The free color test reads your season from a photo and seven quick questions. The photo stays on your device. If you want it, your personal color report is $12.99 once, with no subscription.

Light summer is defined by lightness first and coolness second. The hair is naturally blonde or light brown with an ash or beige tone, the skin is fair to light with a pink, rosy or neutral cast, and the eyes are usually light: blue, gray, aqua or a pale green. Even the darkest feature, often the brows, stays in the light to medium range.

Because nothing in the face is dark, the palette tops out at medium values. Powder blue, rose quartz, lavender, soft mint and pearl gray carry most of the wardrobe, and slate blue or dusty navy act as the deepest notes. The colors are cool but not icy and soft but not grayed: think a summer sky at midday rather than a winter frost.

Where light summer sits among the 12 seasons

Light summer plots at depth 0.22, the second lightest point on the chart after light spring at 0.18. Its warmth is minus 0.45, cool but milder than cool summer, and its clarity is 0.5, exactly halfway between soft and bright. Its nearest anchor is soft summer, a little deeper and much more muted. Light spring sits almost level with it on depth but on the far side of the warmth line, so the two look alike in lightness and differ in temperature. That is the split most light summers have to settle, and it is a question of gold versus silver rather than of how pale the colors are.

Recognize it

How to tell if you are a light summer

  • Your natural hair is blonde or light brown, and it reads ash or beige rather than golden in daylight.
  • Your eyes are light, and they look brightest next to soft blue, aqua or lavender.
  • Black near the face looks severe; even charcoal can seem heavy.
  • Your skin flushes pink rather than turning golden, and peach or apricot clothing makes it look slightly orange.
  • Pastels suit you, but only the cool ones: icy pink yes, buttercup no.
  • You look best in silver or white gold, especially in fine, delicate pieces.

A three-step drape check at home

  1. 1

Take two pieces of fabric or paper, one in Powder Blue and one in a light peach, to a window. With no makeup, hold each under your chin. On a light summer the blue makes the skin look clear and the peach makes it look slightly flushed or orange.

  2. 2

Then swap Pearl Gray for a warm ivory or cream. If the pearl gray lifts your face and the cream looks yellow against it, the cool side is confirmed.

  3. 3

Finally, check depth with Dusty Navy against black. The navy should look like a strong but comfortable frame; black should look like it is pulling all the attention away from your eyes.

Side by side

Light summer vs light spring

The two light seasons are nearly identical in value, and that is what makes them hard to tell apart in a photo. Both suit pale, delicate colors, and both look heavy in black, burgundy and deep brown. The difference is the base of every color: light summer pastels lean blue and pink, light spring pastels lean yellow and peach.

Hair is a useful clue. Light summer blonde tends to be ash, beige or mousy, and it can look darker and duller in shade. Light spring blonde has golden or strawberry reflections that catch the sun. Skin follows the same pattern: a light summer pinks, a light spring warms to peach or golden.

The test that separates them

Hold a piece of silver jewelry and a piece of gold against your face in daylight, one at a time. If silver makes the skin look clearer and gold makes it look yellow, choose light summer. If gold adds a glow and silver looks gray against you, choose light spring.

Side by side

Light summer vs soft summer

Soft summer is light summer's closest neighbor on the map. They share a mild coolness, and both prefer gentle contrast. Light summer is noticeably paler, and its colors are a touch cleaner: a clear sky blue, an aqua, a lilac with no gray in it. Soft summer needs those hues muted with gray and set at a medium value.

In practice, a light summer looks fresh in pale colors that would look chalky or blank on a soft summer, and it can disappear inside the medium, dusty mauves and sages that make a soft summer look polished. If your hair has darkened to a medium ash brown with age, you may find you have drifted toward the soft summer side.

The test that separates them

Compare Icy Pink with a dusty mauve under your chin. If the icy pink brightens your face and the mauve makes it look dim, you are a light summer. If the icy pink looks pasty and the mauve looks like your own coloring, try the soft summer palette.

Light Summer colors to avoid

Each one with the reason it fights this coloring and a color from the palette that does the same job.

  • Orange

A strong warm color that overpowers fair, cool skin and makes it look flushed.

    Wear instead: Watermelon Pink

  • Mustard

Both warm and darker than the coloring, so the skin looks sallow beside it.

    Wear instead: Cool Lemon

  • Black

Far deeper than any feature of a light summer face, so it frames the clothes instead of the eyes.

    Wear instead: Dusty Navy

  • Warm Brown

Chocolate and tan browns add a yellow-orange cast and a heaviness the palette avoids.

    Wear instead: Cool Taupe

  • Camel

A golden beige that makes pink skin look ruddy around the collar.

    Wear instead: Dove Gray

  • Tomato Red

An orange-red that clashes with a pink flush and makes lips look painted.

    Wear instead: Raspberry Sorbet

  • Olive Drab

A warm, muddy green that turns light cool skin gray.

    Wear instead: Mint Green

  • Bottle Green

Too deep and too heavy for a light face, even though it is a cool color.

    Wear instead: Muted Teal

Wearing it

Light Summer outfits: six combinations

  • Work

Slate Blue, Pearl Gray, Powder Blue

A slate blue jacket over pearl gray trousers, with powder blue at the collar so the lightest color sits nearest the face.

  • Evening

Heather Plum, Lavender Mist, Soft White

A heather plum dress lifted by lavender mist accessories; soft white only as a small accent.

  • Casual

Denim Blue, Icy Pink, Soft White

Mid-blue jeans, an icy pink tee and soft white sneakers keep the contrast gentle.

  • Summer

    Aqua, Soft White, Seafoam

Aqua and soft white in light fabrics; seafoam as a cover-up works in strong sun without washing you out.

  • Winter

Dusty Navy, Dove Gray, Rose Quartz

A dusty navy coat as the darkest piece, with a dove gray knit and a rose quartz scarf at the neck.

  • Accessories

    Cool Taupe, Periwinkle, Pearl Gray

Cool taupe for bags and shoes instead of brown, with a periwinkle scarf or small bag for color.

Keep depth low

Light summer outfits work when the darkest color is slate blue or dusty navy. A black coat over a pale outfit breaks the softness at the neckline.

Tone on tone

Two pale cool colors together, such as powder blue and soft white, is the easiest formula. It looks deliberate without needing a contrast color.

Choose cool pastels, not warm ones

Rose quartz and icy pink flatter; peach and buttercup do not, even when they are equally pale.

Hair

Light Summer hair color

Shades that suit

  • Ash blonde. The most natural light summer shade. A cool toner keeps it from drifting yellow.
  • Pale beige blonde. Slightly warmer than ash but still neutral, a good option if pure ash looks flat.
  • Light ash brown. Adds a little definition while staying soft. Pair it with fine, cool highlights around the face.
  • Champagne highlights. Very fine pale highlights in a cool or neutral blonde brighten the face without adding gold.
  • Silver and white. Graying hair on a light summer usually looks soft and natural, since it stays cool and light.

Shades that fight it

  • Golden or honey blonde. Yellow at the hairline makes pink skin look ruddy and fights the cool palette.
  • Dark chocolate brown. Adds depth and warmth the face cannot balance, so features look washed out under it.
  • Copper or strawberry red. Orange tones near light cool skin bring out redness rather than glow.

Makeup

Light Summer makeup: base, cheek, eyes and lips

Base and foundation

Choose a fair to light shade with a cool or neutral base, often marked C or N, and avoid anything labeled golden or warm. Light summer skin often shows pink around the nose and cheeks; a neutral shade evens that better than a pink one. Swatch on the jaw and check in daylight after the formula dries.

Cheek

Soft cool pink or a sheer rose, kept light and blended high. A strong or warm blush is easy to overdo on fair skin and reads as a patch of color rather than a flush.

  • Sheer cool pink #EBA7B8
  • Soft rose #DC95A6

Eyes

Soft gray, taupe, lavender and pearl suit light eyes. Choose a gray-brown or soft navy mascara and liner over black, which can look stark against pale lashes and brows.

  • Soft lavender #B7A8CC
  • Pearl #E6E4E8
  • Gray taupe #9B9092

Lips

Rose pink, soft raspberry and a sheer berry stain suit light summer best. Coral and orange shades turn warm and look heavy against the delicate palette.

  • Rose pink #D98196
  • Soft raspberry #C46483
  • Sheer berry #B06380

The base

Metals, jewelry and wardrobe neutrals

Silver, white gold and platinum. Gold should be pale and thin if it is worn at all.

Silver, white gold and platinum suit light summer best. Fine, delicate pieces work better than heavy chains, which can look bulky against light coloring.

Freshwater pearls, aquamarine, moonstone, rose quartz and pale amethyst sit naturally in this palette. If you love gold, choose a pale, polished finish in a small piece.

  • Soft White
  • Pearl Gray
  • Dove Gray
  • Cool Taupe
  • Slate Blue
  • Dusty Navy

Every depth

Light Summer on fair, medium and deep skin

Fair skin

Fair light summers wear the lights and mid-tones near the face: powder blue, icy pink, lavender mist and periwinkle. Dusty navy is the darkest color that still looks comfortable at the neckline.

Medium skin

Medium skin with light, cool hair and eyes reads as light summer when the overall coloring stays low in contrast. The mid-tones and accents do the most work here: bluebell, aqua, orchid haze and watermelon pink.

Deep skin

The season is defined by light coloring overall, so deep skin with cool, soft features usually reads as soft or cool summer in the color test instead. If you do fall here, lean on the deeps such as denim blue, muted teal and heather plum, with the pastels used as accents.

Questions

Light Summer questions

How is light summer different from light spring?

Undertone. Both are light, but light summer is cool and light spring is warm. Powder blue and rose quartz suit a light summer; peach and buttercup suit a light spring.

Can a light summer wear white?

Soft white and pearl gray, yes. Optic white can look harsh against fair skin, but it is less of a problem than black.

What hair colors suit light summer?

Ash blonde, beige blonde, light ash brown, fine champagne highlights and natural silver. Avoid golden, copper and very dark brown shades.

Can a light summer wear black?

It is best kept away from the face, in shoes, trousers or a bag. Dusty navy, slate blue and smoke blue give depth that suits the coloring better.

Can a light summer wear navy?

Yes, dusty navy is the darkest neutral in the palette and replaces black as the go-to base. A very deep, inky navy is harder to wear than a softer one.

Which jewelry suits a light summer?

Silver, white gold and platinum, especially in fine or delicate pieces. Pearls, aquamarine and moonstone echo the palette.

What colors should a light summer avoid?

Strong warm colors such as orange, mustard, tomato red and camel, and very deep colors such as black, chocolate brown and bottle green.
